These are pictures of pioneers arriving in Calgary and in Winnipeg. Follow the Netsteps below to to learn about pioneer life in Canada and the United States. Were the pioneer's experiences in both countries similar or different? How were they the same? Different? These questions will be considered as we use the information from these sites to study communities in the past.

This site is sponsored by St. Augustine School in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It is a "Grass Roots" project for 2000, funded by Canada's SchoolNet. Children in Grade 4 put together information on pioneer housing, food, tools, and transportation. The school chose a general theme of "Adaptations". This theme was chosen because it pertains to people and animals within the local and global communities. |

This is a pictorial journey of Pioneer Trails State Park in the Salt Lake City, Utah. Visitors can take a virtual tour of the pioneer village looking at homes, cabins, implements, jobs of the time, etc. It gives accurate pictures of housing, jobs and equipment used by people in the pioneer era. The story of the Mormon pioneers was authored by Max Bertola and then adapted for the internet with pictures of activities that take place at the park. |

This site provides the viewer with information as to where the pioneers journeyed from, how they traveled, the supplies they carried, and what life on the trail was like. In addition there are links to pages on cooking, crossing rivers, tools and utensils with pictures), first aid and several other topics of interest. The site was developed by students at Floresville Elementary School in south Texas. It is sponsored by ThinkQuest Inc. a non profit organization dedicated to using technology in education. ThinkQuest is an online community where young people learn, teach, mentor, discover, research and grow through ThinkQuest programs. |

This site provides information on six different groups around the pioneer era. The farmer page has an excellent picture of an original sod house. This web site was created by a grade 5 teacher at Mendon Center Elementary School. The site is sponsored by the Pittsford Central School District in New York where you can find an overview of the schools in the district. |

This ThinkQuest site was developed by Hayward High School in Wisconsin and provides the viewer with pictures of immigrants on crowded boats and shows the costumes of the period for adults and children. ThinkQuest Inc. is a non profit organization which offers programs designed to advance education through the use of technology. The major focus of the web site is to allow teachers and their students to post educational activities in all subject areas. |
