Life as a Pioneer
A Multimedia Presentation Lesson

Activity Description

This learning activity consists of a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint. Students are required to construct a presentation using information they have learned from netsteps and from information they have read and discussed in class.  In class the students will decide on the information that they will put into a PowerPoint by using a template (on paper) to organize the information.

In the lab the students will make several slides on the topic of pioneers using a PowerPoint template on the computer. The first four slides will be done working together as the teacher demonstrates various aspects of the PowerPoint program.  The teacher will have the assistance of students in the enrichment program who are familiar with PowerPoint.  After the students have completed 4 slides with teacher and student assistance they will then complete a minimum of 4 more slides choosing the topics from the PowerPoint template they completed earlier in class.

By utilizing available multimedia tools, students can also embed different multimedia features into their presentation, such as graphics, animation, pictures, and audio clips.  Pictures, graphics, animations, etc. will be stored in a file making it easier for the students to choose the features they want to use to enhance their presentation. Students familiar with inserting clips from online may choose to insert clips from Clips Online.

Benefits of Using Technology

This will be the culminating activity for the student's unit on pioneers.  PowerPoint allows the students to present their information in a way that is different from writing a research report. With the help of pictures, sounds, graphics and animation, their presentation will be more attractive and entertaining. The organizing and editing of the existing slides will be easy, fast, and efficient.  This will be the grade 3 student's first experience with PowerPoint.  It will provide them with a new and exciting way to demonstrate to their parents what they have learned in social studies.  Their PowerPoint presentations will be posted on the school web site for their parents to view.  This allows the parents to view topics their children are covering in school.

Lesson Plan

Part I

1.     In the classroom the students will go over the PowerPoint template (on paper).  The teacher will discuss the expectations for the information required in each of the topics.

2.     The students will the go to the computer lab and from the school website they will access the netsteps for Pioneers.

3.     They will record information from the netstep pages into the template.

4.     Using handouts from the classroom on pioneer life the students will add to the information they found in the netsteps and check the accuracy of the information they chose to use.

5.     When the students have all completed the PowerPoint template (on paper) they will move to the lab for the demonstration and instructions in using PowerPoint to design a presentation.  Using a template for the PowerPoint the students will insert their information into the first 4 slides.

6.     They will insert pictures and graphics from a file created by the teacher, from clip art or from clips online.

Part II

1.     The students will work on completing a minimum of 4 more slides.

2.     They may choose to insert a picture of the candle and candle holder the made in class. These pictures will be in a picture file.

3.     They may also insert pictures of pioneer artifacts from a presentation by a guest speaker.  These pictures will be in a picture file.

Part III

1.     When all information is inserted into the students' slides they will then work on inserting the backgrounds and sounds.  They will be required to insert one basic background, one two- toned background and one from fill effects.  Backgrounds for all other slides will be their choice.

2.     Next they will be asked to animate the text of 2 slides and include sound.

3.     Those students who wish may add sound files, such as animal sounds to one of their slides.

When this activity is completed students will pair up and share their presentations in groups of two.  We will then have a parent evening to share our PowerPoint presentations, craft activities etc. that are connected to this unit.
