Glossary of Assessment Terms

Criterion-Referenced Testing
  • Test items that directly measure the behaviors described in a given set of behavioral objectives.
Normative-Referenced Testing
  • Interpreting an individual’s performance by comparing it to the performance of others in a relevant group.
Norm group
  • A representative sample
Direct Testing
  • A method of testing using direct observation of actual task performance or examination of a sample of completed work. E.g. portfolio, musical recital
Indirect Testing
  • A method of testing using indirect observation. e.g. post self-assessment, post peer-evaluation.
Instructor-based Testing
  • A method of testing in which the teacher does not test every objective but uses their discretion in selecting a representative sample of all the objectives.
Mastery level
  • A specified level of performance (standard) that demonstrates students have learned (mastered) all of the skills or knowledge related to a body of knowledge as represented by a set of performance objectives .
